- Refer to the company's Business Information to see verified business information on licensing, general liability insurance, workers' compensation insurance, bonding, verified reviews, and recent project pictures.
- Consider the contractor's responsiveness in providing a quote/estimate. A contractor who is slow to provide project details/estimates may be even less responsive when performing the work!
- Don't take a contractor's word for anything. Make sure the contractor puts the quote, guarantee/warranty, and promises in writing and get a signed contract including a scope-of-work for your project.
- Never pay for a small project before it is completed. For larger projects, read our article about down payments and how much to put down and not paying a large amount before the project is completed.
- Dont just look for the lowest quote. Consider important factors such as scope-of-work, the contractor's reputation, experience, reliability, and value. A low bid could be a red flag.
- Never pay in cash or pay the full price in advance! Keep a record of all of your deposits and payments.
- Keep copies of everything including your original quote, the final contract, invoices, deposits, payments, progress photos, and communication records.
- Make sure your contractor pulls permits at the county office as required for larger projects.
- Before paying for and signing-off on a project, make sure the work is completed to your satisfaction. For larger projects get a material and lien waiver from your contractor.
